Andrew Corporation to Supply Wireless 911 Caller Location System to Centennial de Puerto Rico.

Centennial Puerto Rico Puerto Rico (pwār`tō rē`kō), island (2005 est. pop. 3,917,000), 3,508 sq mi (9,086 sq km), West Indies, c.1,000 mi (1,610 km) SE of Miami, Fla.  Operations Corporation (Centennial de Puerto Rico) has signed an agreement to purchase Andrew Corporation's Geometrix(R) E911 wireless caller location systems to provide public safety agencies with accurate caller location information on cellular calls to 911.

The Andrew Geometrix system, which will be installed in the Centennial de Puerto Rico cellular network, will be compatible with Centennial's current CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  digital technology and customer handsets, and is adaptable to future technologies that Centennial may implement.

"Centennial de Puerto Rico will not have to replace or modify its customers' handsets, because the Andrew system will provide the location capability completely in the Centennial network," said Tom Cogar, executive vice president & chief technical officer of Centennial Caribbean Operations. "Our customers will benefit immediately when the system is installed and will not have to purchase expensive new handsets in order to be located in emergency situations. One of the most important factors in Centennial's selection of the Andrew system is its ability to bring the added safety of 911 caller location to existing, as well as new customers."

Andrew's Geometrix has been selected by more carriers than any other 911 location system. The Geometrix location system will allow Centennial de Puerto Rico to provide locations of wireless 911 callers to emergency response centers, called Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), that are equipped to receive such information. Centennial customers and roamers will be able to continue using their existing handsets and current 911 calling procedures. To maintain caller privacy, Geometrix systems are designed to provide location information only when a caller initiates a 911 call.
