Andrew Corporation and Kathrein Form Alliance To Offer Remote Electrical Downtilt Antenna Technology.

Business Editors

ORLAND PARK, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2003

-- REDT enables wireless network operators to improve coverage,

capacity, call quality and reduce costs

to extract maximum revenue from their networks.

Andrew Corporation (NASDAQ:ANDW) and Kathrein-Werke KG of Germany announced an agreement where the companies will cooperate on the licensing of Remote Electrical Downtilt Antenna Technology (REDT) related patents. Under the new agreement, Andrew and Kathrein will cross-license relevant patents, giving both companies the ability to offer Remote Electrical Downtilt Technology to customers worldwide.

"This is a really great opportunity for Andrew, Kathrein, and the wireless market," said Paul Cox, Group President, Antenna Products, Andrew Corporation. "Because of the global presence of Andrew and Kathrein, operators worldwide will now have a competitive choice for Remote Electrical Downtilt Technology. This will help operators to transition from traditional fixed tilt antenna solutions to Remote Electrical Downtilt Technology at a much quicker pace."

"We value this licensing agreement with Andrew and look forward to working together to ensure that Remote Electrical Downtilt Technology becomes the technology of choice for operators in global markets," said Alois Trepesch, Managing Director of Kathrein-Werke KG.

The remote controlled electrical downtilt technology (marketed by Andrew as the Teletilt(R) Antenna Network Management System) enables network operators to remotely adjust the electrical downtilt of an antenna system and control its signal coverage footprint. The system optimizes system coverage by allowing antennas to be adjusted remotely without needing to put the entire cell-site out of service or sending a crew to adjust the antennas.

REDT allows quick site optimization, independent of weather and site access difficulties. The site remains active while the antenna adjustments occur. One of the biggest operational cost savings is that special equipment and manpower is not required to make the antenna adjustments.

In Andrew customer system trials conducted over several months in Richmond, Virginia, USA, the operator was able to remotely adjust antenna coverage with the seasonal changes and eliminate the expense of tower climbing and site access coordination. With costs often exceeding $10,000 to adjust antennas at complex sites, the Teletilt REDT solution pays for itself within months. Even at more easily accessible sites, the Teletilt Antenna Network Management System can still easily pay for itself within a year, making this attractive technology for virtually every operator.
