Andrew Brings Wireless Coverage to China's Shi-Tai Rail Line.

BEIJING -- China's high speed Shijiazhuang-to-Taiyuan railway (the Shi-Tai line) will include a wireless network for all passengers to use, thanks to coverage and capacity solutions from Andrew, the CommScope, Inc. division that is a global leader in wireless communication systems and products.

Andrew will supply its RADIAX[R] radiating ra·di·ate

Text messaging implies sending short messages generally no more than a couple of hundred characters in length. , and other services. Andrew's coverage and capacity solution will also support a GSM-R GSM-R Global System for Mobile Communication - Railway (European Railway Wireless Standard)  network to enable fully interoperable The ability for one system to communicate or work with another. See interoperability.  communications among railway employees and emergency personnel. Andrew's RADIAX cables are manufactured entirely in the company's Suzhou, China plant, where outdoor and indoor cable test lines that simulate tunnel conditions are located.

"Andrew's localized manufacturing in China, as well as its specialized testing environment that mimics a railway tunnel, is a major advantage in serving our customers in this market," said Ben Cardwell, vice president, Sales and Marketing, Asia-Pacific. "As China continues rapidly constructing and expanding its urban rail transportation networks, Andrew hopes to assist by supporting communication networks across the country."

The Shi-Tai line has a total length of almost 29 kilometers. In its initial stage of operation, the line will transport all passengers and some freight traffic between Shijiazhuang and Taiyuan. Expected to open in 2009 is the high speed railway line, which will only support passenger traffic with its double-track, completely enclosed en·close   also in·close

design. Train speeds are expected to reach up to 250 kilometers per hour. Upon completion of the railway, travel time to Shijiazhuang from Taiyuan will be reduced to about one hour from the more than five hours it currently takes. The Shi-Tai line will connect with the Beijing-Shijiazhuang high speed line, allowing passengers to reach Beijing from Taiyuan in little more than two hours.

"Enabling wireless signal transmissions in high speed railway tunnels is a great challenge because of the enclosed environment and rapidly changing signal levels," said Cardwell. "However, Andrew has a lot of successful experiences in the field of high-speed railway network signal coverage all over the world. Its radiating cables have long been deployed in rail transportation and other mobile communication systems."

Andrew's long history of providing advanced wireless infrastructure solutions in China began in the early 1970s and has led to its establishment of solid, long-term cooperative relationships with major Chinese customers, including telecom operators and OEMs. The company is a leading solution provider for communication networks in the rail transportation sector, as well as being the only international manufacturer to produce both radiating cables and repeaters in China. Andrew has provided wireless coverage systems for China's railways before, most recently in the Beijing-to-Tianjin high speed railway and six lines of the Beijing Metro, both in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

It boasts over 20 years of experience in designing, testing, installing, and managing complicated wireless signal distribution systems for metropolitan railways, tramways, and other large-sized construction projects. It has applied wireless solutions successfully in more than 30 subway projects in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Tianjin. Among numerous other projects, Andrew previously was chosen to provide coverage and capacity for the Turin, Italy underground in advance of the 2006 Winter Olympics and for many of the 2006 World Cup venues in Germany. Past projects that included furnishing in-train repeaters for high-speed rail High-speed rail is a type of passenger rail transport that operates significantly faster than the normal speed of rail traffic.
