The Gitana property located 60 kilometres southeast of Copiapo, Chile, encompasses the Gitana copper mine. The mine has been producing, on a small scale, high-grade copper oxide and sulphide ores from a series of pits and underground workings for the past thirty years but has never been subject to a modern systematic exploration program. A 13-kilometer induced polarization survey, recently completed by Geodatos, Geofisica de Avanzada, Chile, outlined a 300 by 500 meter chargeability anomaly located on the western margin of the Gitana granodiorite granodiorite Medium- to coarse-grained rock that is one of the most abundant intrusive rocks. It contains quartz and is distinguished from granite by having more plagioclase feldspar than orthoclase feldspar; its other mineral constituents include hornblende, biotite, and stock in an area of hydrothermal brecciation brec·ci·ate tr.v. brec·ci·at·ed, brec·ci·at·ing, brec·ci·ates To form (rock) into breccia. brec . The anomaly is approximately 400 meters west southwest of the Gitana mine, which is located along the northeastern margin of the granodiorite stock. Historically the majority of ore mined from the Gitana deposit has been extracted from a single breccia breccia: see conglomerate. breccia Coarse sedimentary rock consisting of angular or nearly angular fragments larger than 0.08 in. Five RC drill holes, each approximately 200 metres deep, will target the chargeability anomaly. A second set of four RC drill holes will target the oxide and sulphide copper mineralization Mineralization The process by which the body uses minerals to build bone structure. Recent underground development on the deepest level of the mine, approximately 40 metres below the surface, has exposed a north-south trending mineralized min·er·al·ize v. min·er·al·ized, min·er·al·iz·ing, min·er·al·iz·es v.tr. 1. The breccia is composed of angular fragments of volcanic rock in a matrix of quartz-pyrite with chalcocite chalcocite Sulfide mineral, Cu2S, that may be an important ore of copper. It belongs to a group of sulfide minerals formed at relatively low temperatures. Chalcocite alters to native copper and other copper minerals. . The mineralization remains open to the north and to depth but is terminated to the south by a late fault. A forty tonne consignment of sulphide mineralization recently mined and processed from this area had a reported grade of 3.2% copper, 1.2 grams/tonne gold and 7.7 grams/tonne silver. It is anticipated that drilling will be completed by the end of March and that assay results will be released by mid-April. Mr. Mike Hodgson, P. Geol, is the Qualified Person, as defined by National Instrument 43-101, responsible for the Gitana exploration program. Mr. Hodgson has reviewed and approved the exploration plans and technical information discussed within this press release.
