Andataco brings high-performance RAID to the small network and desktop; RAID Lite scalable from desktop to data center.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 1995--ANDATACO announced the availability of RAID Lite, the first of a new generation of RAID arrays powerful enough to service the I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

and up to 32MB of read/write cache memory, RAID Lite provides lightning quick response time for transaction-intensive database applications. For applications that require high data transfer rates and massive capacities, RAID Lite features up to five 20MB/sec, Fast Wide SCSI A SCSI interface that transfers 16 bits in parallel rather than 8 bits. See SCSI.

processors supporting up to 35 drives for a total capacity of 150.5GB.

RAID Lite is also designed for flexibility with support for desktop, deskside and rackmo1nt enclosures, as well as support for RAID levels 0, 1, 5 and 6. RAID Lite is priced from $4,995 for a desktop system with two 1.0GB drives up to $150,000 for a data center system with thirty-five 4.3GB drives.

RAID Lite is targeted at the fast-growing midrange systems and network segment of the UNIX market. According to Fara Yale, principal analyst with the Computer Storage Service, Computer Systems and Peripherals Group of Dataquest: "Workstation vendors continue to enhance their product lines to incorporate symmetric multiprocessing capabilities, they are offering more scalability on the desktop systems and improving the price/performance value of their systems at all levels. These systems, including the smaller systems and servers, increasingly need high-performance storage that is cost-effective, that can grow along with the requirements of the system and that can provide improved data availability."

UNIX system administrators have always understood the benefits of RAID performance and fault tolerance, but until now, RAID was priced out Priced out

of their reach. The result was that RAID became the exclusive domain of large network servers.

"RAID Lite finally allows us to provide the mission-critical redundancy, once only available at data centers, to our satellite production facilities," said Jeremy McDermond, technical analyst with Willamette Industries Inc. "RAID Lite's reasonable pricing permits us to securely move into distributed computing, while maintaining the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week reliability of our mainframe platforms," he added.

RAID Lite is backed by powerful but user-friendly system management software and a full suite of services. Every RAID Lite System includes a RAID Management Utility called RMU RMU Robert Morris University (Moon Township, Pennsylvania)

Services available with RAID Lite include pre-sales consulting, installation, 24-hour Express Exchange, and on-site maintenance.

Summary of Key RAID Lite features and benefits:

* Capacity ranging from 2.1GB to 150.5GB.

* Modular desktop, deskside and rackmount enclosures for environments ranging from desktop to data center.

* RAID levels 0, 1, 5 and 6 to suit the specific needs of a variety of applications.

* Advanced 32-bit version of industry standard SCSI SCSI

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
processors support Fast Wide SCSI interface and disk drives.

* Up to 32MB of standard SIMM cache memory provides lightning- quick response to read and write requests.

* The industry's fastest 7200 RPM disk drives speed up disk access time.

* Redundant load sharing power supplies ensure a source of continuous power.

* Battery backup protects data in cache during power or system failures.

* Automatic rebuild of hot spare disk drives enable RAID Lite to repair itself.

* User-definable rebuild priority to suit your specific need for fault tolerance versus I/O performance.

* User-replaceable disk modules and power supplies enable self-maintenance.

* FWSE or FWD (Fast Wide Differential) Refers to a Fast Wide SCSI implementation that uses differential signaling. See SCSI.  SCSI host ports for wide connectivity across UNIX platforms.

* Three user interfaces (front panel, controller-based monitor utility and host-based RMU Lite software) provide the right RAID management tools for the operator, service engineer, and data center manager.

* Point, click and drag client/server RAID Management Utility, RMU Lite, for remote monitoring and control across the network.
