And the winner is ...Dear Teacher, In this issue, we celebrate student award winners. Our cover artist, Ebony ebony, common name for members of the Ebenaceae, a family of trees and shrubs widely distributed in warmer climates and in the tropics. The principal genus, Diospyros, includes both ebony and persimmon trees. Robinson, won a prestigious Gold Award in this year's Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition (see p. 6.). Ebony credits her teacher and mentor, Dr. Elizabeth "Boo" Ruch, with inspiring her. "That's the kind of teacher I want to be," says Ebony, who plans to study teaching as well as fine arts at Maryland College Institute of Art. Congratulations go to Katie Cassidy Katie Cassidy (born November 25, 1986) is an American singer and actress. Biography Early life Cassidy was born in Los Angeles, California, daughter of '70s pop idol David Cassidy and former model Sherry Benedon; the two had an "on-again, off-again" , winner of this year's Mapman Contest, for her unique map of Australia (see p. 20).
