Last December, to great fanfare, Ahmed Zewail Ahmed Hassan Zewail (Arabic: أحمد حسن زويل) (born February 26 1946 in Damanhur, Egypt) is an Egyptian American scientist, and the winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on femtochemistry. of the California Institute of Technology California Institute of Technology, at Pasadena, Calif.; originally for men, became coeducational in 1970; founded 1891 as Throop Polytechnic Institute; called Throop College of Technology, 1913–20. in Pasadena announced that he and his colleagues had devised a way to clock the previously unmeasurable speed of the disintegration of a chemical bond: ICN ICN International Council of Nurses. to I + CN (SN: 12/12/87, p.372). In the Sept. 2 SCIENCE, Zewail reveals the actual speed of the reaction: 205 femtoseconds (10.sup.-15 seconds). |
