This year's award winners are featured in this issue (see "New Faces, New Places" and its companion piece, "Paving the Way"), but perhaps you, or someone you know, might have what it takes to be featured next year. The awards, designed specifically to keep the entrepreneurs' dream alive, is something BE continues to sponsor, if only because as a black business itself, our company's top executives and editors know the hardships faced by many of today's black business owners just to stay afloat in any economy. The BE Small Business Awards are given out in four categories: Business Innovator of the Year, Rising Star Award, Emerging Company of the Year, and Kidpreneurs Award. With the exception of the Kidpreneurs Award, the award's review board requests an entrepreneur entrepreneur (än'trəprənûr`) [Fr.,=one who undertakes], person who assumes the organization, management, and risks of a business enterprise.  or business owner meet several requirements. Each company must be independently operated, must be at least 5 years old, and must be at least 51% black owned. It must also generate annual revenues of at least $250,000 (but no more than $15 million), show a pattern of increasing revenues for two consecutive years preceding an application or nomination, and have a minimum of three employees. The Kidprenuers Award nominee nominee n. 1) a person or entity who is requested or named to act for another, such as an agent or trustee. 2) a potential successor to another's rights under a contract.  has similar requirements. Nominees must operate a business that is at least 2 years old, be at least 51% black owned, demonstrate that the company generates a revenue (even if it is not yet profitable), serve as a role model for other young entrepreneurs, and have a comprehensive understanding of, and direct involvement in the daily operations of, the company.
