The event, sponsored by the city of Eugene's Recreation Services Department, was inspired by "The Amazing Race," a popular reality television show that concluded its ninth installment last week with the Hippies, Tyler and B.J., winning the $1 million prize.

Organizers designed the race to be fun, and to play off the city's unofficial slogan: "Greatest City for the Arts and the Outdoors."

Teams earned reductions on their race times for helping other teams, being extra creative, laughing or taking time to enjoy some art along the way.

, a recreation program manager, briefed the teams on the rules Saturday morning, starting with Rule No. 1: "Each team member will have fun," he said.

Also: No cheating, unless it's done artistically.

In the end, the race turned out as organizers had planned.

Some teams zoomed through the challenges, trying to get the fastest time.

Then there was Team C-Plus - so named because its members didn't consider themselves quite good enough to be the A Team.

Team C-Plus made a point to stop and smell the roses, to converse, to enjoy art and to help other teams.

At some stations, the team members did both the physical and mental challenge, just for the fun of it.

They were so late that city staff members left one of the last stations, thinking all the teams had arrived already.

When the team straggled back into the park at about 3:30 p.m., 5 1/2 hours after starting, it was the final one across the finish line by a long shot.

"We had the most fun possible," said team member Holly Hartmann.

But then organizers started tallying the minutes taken off their time for all their extra credit deductions, and found that Team C-Plus had won.

"It's ironic and fitting that the team that crossed the finish line last got the winning tally," race organizer Kellie Nemke said.

"It was really neat - we didn't even rig that."

The race was so successful that Nemke said that she expects it will become an annual event.
