Ancient and modern: the Met's starry roster of broadcasts for its 125th anniversary season runs the operatic gamut from classical myth to the nuclear age.

Dec. 20 [red circle]

Thais

Jules Massenet Jules (Émile Frédéric) Massenet (May 12, 1842 – August 13, 1912) was a French composer. He is best known for his operas, which were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century; they afterwards fell into oblivion for the most part, but have undergone periodic revivals

A hotly anticipated new production of the 2008/09 season, this tale of a courtesan cour·te·san

The Magic Flute

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

This Julie (The Lion King) Taymor abridged, English-language version of Mozart's magical tale looks set to become a Nutcracker-like Christmas tradition. Nicole Cabell, winner of the 2005 Cardiff Singer of the World competition, sings Pamina to the Tamino of Greek-American tenor Dimitri Pittas (Macduff in last season's gripping Macbeth).

Jan. 3 [red circle]

La boheme

Giacomo Puccini

Only slightly late for the Dec. 22 Puccini anniversary, this revival of the much-loved Franco Zeffirelli production stars Ramon Vargas as Rodolfo and Latvian soprano Maija Kovalevska as Mimi. A student of Mirella Freni and winner of Placido Placido may refer to any of the following: People
Placido is a traditional Spaniard clan name (see Clan Placido) and it is now a common given name and a less common surname.

It is also a fairly common surname in Southern Italy.
Domingo's Operalia competition in 2006, Kovalevska could become the next big Puccini soprano. Frederic Chaslin, recently in Montreal for Bizet's Les Pecheurs de perles, is on the podium.

La rondine

Giacomo Puccini

Once you've heard the music in this World War I-era gem, you'll wonder why it's so rarely performed. The handsome Nicolas Joel staging, set in the Art Deco period, may change the opera's fortunes. The husband-and-wife team of Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna, both passionate advocates for the opera, are cast as the star-crossed lovers, Magda and Ruggero. This promises to be a very glamorous live HD cinema transmission.

Doctor Atomic

John Adams

This is an audio repeat of the HD live transmission from the fall. Never mind. It's another opportunity to hear the marvellous Gerald Finley as J. Robert Oppenheimer, a role he created and has now made his own on both sides of the Atlantic in two different productions. This Met staging also marks the house debut of fellow Canadian Roger Honeywell, as Captain James Nolan.

Jan. 24 [red circle]

Orfeo ed Euridice Orfeo ed Euridice (French version: Orphée et Eurydice; English translation: Orpheus and Eurydice) is an opera composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck based on the myth of Orpheus, set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi.

Rigoletto

Giuseppe Verdi

Serbian baritone Zeljko Lucic follows his riveting Macbeth from last season as the Victor Hugo character that Verdi said was "one of the most important creations of the theatre of all countries and all ages." Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, a huge success in the title role of Rossini's Matilde di Shabran Matilde di Shabran (1821), ossia Bellezza, e cuor di ferro (Matilde of Shabran, or Beauty with a Heart of Iron), is a melodramma giocoso  at Covent Garden this fall, sings Gilda and Giuseppe Filianoti is the libidinous li·bid·i·nous

Lucia di Lammermoor Lucia di Lammermoor is a dramma tragico, or tragic opera in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. Salvatore Cammarano wrote the Italian libretto after Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor. It is one of the leading bel canto operas.

Feb. 14 [red circle]

Eugene Onegin

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

This Robert Carsen/Michael Levine production has become a much-appreciated staple of the Met's repertory. In this revival of one of opera's most lyrically romantic pieces, Thomas Hampson sings the title role, with Karita Mattila (stunning as Salome earlier in the season) as Tatiana and Piotr Beczala as Lenski.

Feb. 21 [red circle]

Adriana Lecouvreur

Francesco Cilea

The big hook in this revival is the appearance of Placido Domingo as Maurizio, the role in which he made his Met debut 40 years ago. Making up the other two points of the murderous love triangle are the formidable Maria Guleghina (Adriana) and Olga Borodina (Princess de Bouillon Bouillon, town (1991 pop. 5,468), Luxembourg prov., SE Belgium, in the Ardennes on the Semois River, near the French border. It is a small manufacturing and tourist center. ).

Feb. 29 [red circle]

Il trovatore

Giuseppe Verdi

A new David McVicar production draws its inspiration from Francisco Goya's The Disasters of War drawings. The opera's string of hit vocal numbers should fare well with a cast that includes Sondra Radvanovsky (Leonora), Dolora Zajick (Azucena), Marcelo Alvarez (Manrico) and Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Di Luna).
