Analysis of rubber by pyrolysis GC/MS.

Routine analysis is said to require automation due to the increasing demand for shorter analysis times, higher throughput and cost reduction. The Pyromat allows users to load up to 24 samples for unattended analysis. All parameters, such as temperature, pyrolysis time and GC conditions, can be defined for each sample, if required.

Despite the power of modern analytical instrument techniques of analysis, such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, one of the most important challenges is said to remain that of sample preparation, especially for non-volatile, insoluble materials and chemicals. Sample preparation is said to require a lot of time and expertise, particularly when dealing with small sample amounts.

Pyrolysis is said to be a well-established method for the analysis of complex non-volatile, chemical materials and provides a time saving alternative. With pyrolysis techniques, it is not necessary to perform sample preparation. Small amounts of sample (micrograms) may be sufficient for an analysis.

The advantage of Curie-Point-Pyrolysis is said to be the use of ferromagnetic material which heats up in a very short time inside a magnetic field to a defined Curie-Point temperature. With increasing temperature, the permeability of ferromagnetic materials decreases. At the Curie-Point, the relative permeability of the sample carrier falls suddenly and the status changes instantaneously from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic.

Applications for pyrolysis include polymers, copolymers, elastomers, synthetics, rubber and other materials.
