Analysis of Photosensitizer Uptake in Roach Malpighian Tubules.With the outbreak of leukemia cases, there is a search for treatments that are more effective than chemotherapy or radiation. Many scientists are studying one such treatment, photodynamic therapy (PDT PDT abbr. (BPD), and lutetium lutetium, formerly lutecium (both: l  tē`shēəm), metallic chemical element; symbol Lu; atomic number 71; at. wt. 174.967; m.p. about 1,663°C;; b.p. texaphyrin (LuTex) were tested to see if they were substrates
of the MDR-1 multidrug resistor pump, or if they could be used in PDT.
It was concluded that LuTex and PhotoFrin were both substrates of the
MDR-1 transporter, but Texas Red and BPD were not. This finding means,
BPD and Texas Red had the potential to be used in PDT.
