Summary

Global demand for batteries will increase by 6.5 percent annually from 2006 through 2008, according to the Freedonia Group. The US-based research firm predicts that mainland China will emerge as one of the world's biggest battery production bases.

According to China Customs statistics, mainland China's battery production volume currently represents at least 25 percent of the global supply. Some industry sources say the percentage may even be as high as 50 percent.

The China Industrial Association of Power Sources (CIAPS) reports that 28 billion units of batteries were produced in mainland China in 2004.

The 151 battery makers included in this report represent about 70 percent of mainland China's production capability. These have an individual output of between 5,000 units and 170 million units monthly, with about 96 percent of them operating at 70 percent of production capacity. About 2 percent of the surveyed makers are Taiwan companies.

Most of the battery makers are located in Guangdong, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Tianjin, Shenyang, Fujian and Harbin.

On alkaline batteries:

--Mainland China is the world's largest alkaline battery supplier, with output of primary cells reaching 22 billion units in 2004.

--Production is expected to increase by 10 percent in 2005.

--Alkaline batteries from mainland China are used widely in electronic toys and portable consumer electronics.

On NiMH batteries:

--Some 800 million units of NiMH batteries were manufactured in mainland China in 2004.

--The region's NiMH battery output accounted for 40 percent of the global supply in 2004.

--NiMH battery exports totaled 675 million units, valued at $442 million in 2004.

--About 60 new entrants plan to include NiMH rechargeable batteries in their product lines in 2005.

On sealed lead-acid batteries:

--About 30 percent of the world's requirement for sealed lead-acid batteries is supplied by mainland China.

--Sealed lead-acid batteries shipments totaled about 107 million units in 2004, increasing by 25 percent from 2003.

--In 2005 and 2006, electric vehicles, UPSes, emergency lighting, security systems and industrial applications will drive demand for sealed lead-acid batteries.

On NiCd batteries:

--Mainland China's production volume of NiCd batteries hit 1 billion units in 2004.

--NiCd battery production in mainland China is set to grow by 5 to 10 percent in the next five years.

--Exports reached 826 million units in 2004, valued at $411 million.
