BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 2003

Clearswift, the world leader in managing and securing electronic communications, today announces the findings of its first "Spam Index," designed to report on the nature of spam e-mails on a monthly basis. In contrast to recent reports that have suggested pornographic spam constitutes 60-80 percent of spam, Clearswift's Spam Index shows that pornographic spam is found only 22 percent of the time. Instead, the largest proportion of spam -- 23 percent -- was distributed by companies selling direct goods.

These figures were extracted from the thousands of unsolicited e-mails received by Clearswift on a weekly basis. These are made up of spam generated by seeding e-mail accounts e-mail account ncuenta de correo  and spam submissions forwarded to Clearswift by customers of its spam-filtering services.

The ability to deploy flexible spam filtering solutions that can take into account personal preferences will be vital in the fight against spam.

Clearswift's Spam Index findings also illustrate the problems of measuring and categorizing spam, as different samples of spam sent to different people involves a range of variables. Factors such as which chat rooms e-mail users have visited, and which Web sites they supplied e-mail addresses to, can greatly influence the level of spam.
