Under their regularly scheduled procedure of backup software writing data to their IBM 3584 tape library, Roche Diagnostics found that they were not able to complete the backup of their Oracle and SAP Testing environment to tape in the data center in Mannheim in the allotted backup window. Forecasts showed that in 2005, the existing LAN infrastructure would be too small, while their existing SAN infrastructure should be used for backup-purposes (LAN-free backup). Restoring any needed data from tape took about the same length of time as the backup. Roche Diagnostics turned to FalconStor and COS Concat AG, a solutions integrator, for a VTL appliance that dramatically reduced the backup and restore windows. "Currently we have 18 application servers and one backup server in our database test SAN.
