Earlier this year Analogic entered into a development and supply contract with Lockheed Martin For the former company, see .

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) is a leading multinational aerospace manufacturer and advanced technology company formed in 1995 by the merger of Lockheed Corporation with Martin Marietta.
Speciality Components of Largo, Fla., to provide a new class of CT explosives detection scanner for Lockheed Martin's eXaminer 3DX 6000 System. This effort is jointly funded by an FAA grant and company contribution.

The eXaminer is expected to perform a three-dimensional analysis of each bag and its entire contents in approximately 5.5 seconds, providing a luggage throughput rate Throughput rate is an obsolete term[1] in the terminology of automated chemical analysis. It may mean either:

averaging 675 bags per hour, with the potential to process 900 bags per hour. As explained by Patricia Krall, Lockheed Martin Speciality Components' program manager for the eXaminer, "The distinct advantage of our system is a full three-dimensional image, created by continuous CT slices instead of two-dimensional X-ray with selected CT slices."

The new CT explosives detection scanner will apply certain technologies developed by Analogic during the past several years in its mobile CT scanner CT scanner

program and will also incorporate new high- speed, dual-energy, multi-ray, X-ray techniques that the company had conceived and for which patents are pending. The dual-energy feature is expected to enhance the ability to discriminate between explosives and nonexplosives. It is anticipated that the system will exceed the detection rates required by the FAA and that false alarm levels will be lower than those specified by the FAA.

The CT portion of the eXaminer system is presently under development by Analogic. A prototype of the eXaminer, which is expected to contribute significantly to improving air travel safety and security around the world, is planned to be ready for initial testing at the FAA Technical Center in mid-1997.
