NORWOOD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 2003

New OthelloOne TV integrates all oscillators to provide lowest

bill-of-material cost radio design for a GSM/GPRS wireless terminal

Analog Devices Analog Devices (NYSE: ADI) is an American multinational producer of semiconductor devices. Analog specializes in ADC, DAC, MEMS, and DSP chips for consumer and industrial goods. Analog is presently designing circuits in the 65 nanometer to 3 µm process feature sizes range. , Inc. (NYSE NYSE

The OthelloOne TV(TM) (AD6539) includes all the features of previous Othello transceivers with the added benefit of on-chip VCOs (voltage-controlled oscillators), which were previously external. This integration significantly reduces the cost and circuit board area for the radio section of a GSM/GPRS wireless terminal. In addition, OthelloOne TV includes four separate LNA LNA Low-Noise Amplifier

It is often located very close to the antenna. ) inputs, one for each GSM/GPRS frequency band, thus enabling handset manufacturers to create true universal handsets that will work on any GSM network in the world.

"OthelloOne TV is further evidence of Analog Devices' ability to innovate GSM/GPRS radios. Handset manufacturers expect a minimum 20 percent or so reduction in their bill-of-material costs each year," said Christian Kermarrec, vice president, RF and wireless systems, Analog Devices. "With OthelloOne TV we achieve this goal by providing our existing customers with a low-risk migration path for reducing cost and size in their designs.  products we announced in February 2003, our best-in-class radio solution gives handset manufacturers the lowest cost structure and simplest manufacturing flow. In addition, the OthelloOne TV radio is fully compatible with our SoftFone(R) family of baseband processors, thereby enabling us to provide a complete signal-chain solution to our wireless handset customers."

Two versions of OthelloOne TV are available. The AD6539L is intended for use with the Analog Devices X-PA (TM)family of power amplifiers with integrated power detectors/controllers, which enable cell phone manufacturers to achieve longer battery life, improve performance and lower manufacturing costs. The second version, the AD6539, includes a power control loop and supports third-party power amplifiers without integrated power control. Both versions include 4 LNA inputs, integrated power-management, integrated LO (local oscillator) and transmit VCOs, fractional-N PLL PLL - phase-locked loop  (phase locked loop) synthesizer synthesizer

, and the full direct-conversion receiver signal path.

Analog Devices was the first to deliver an open-market direct conversion radio with its initial Othello product and the Othello family has since evolved into a single-chip solution with the addition of several key functions on-chip, including power management, LOs and VCOs, to further reduce cost and size in their customers' products. Analog Devices' OthelloOne radio is currently the radio solution for the Intel(R) PXA800F (Manitoba) hardware reference design. In addition, Analog Devices is currently the only manufacturer offering direct conversion radios for 3G cellular handsets and wireless terminals.

Pricing and Availability

The AD6539 and AD6539L are both sampling now, with production scheduled for mid-2003. Pricing for the products is less than $5.00 each, in 10,000 unit quantities.
