Analog Devices Creates New User Experiences in Mobile Devices.

- Signal processing innovations enable mobile TV, motion sensing and enhanced audio and image quality in the palm of your hand.

- New communications products simplify WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) A 3G high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that use the TDMA or GSM technology worldwide, including AT&T (formerly Cingular) and T-Mobile in the U.S.  radio design and make multimedia features more affordable.

NORWOOD, Mass. -- Analog Devices (NYSE NYSE

: ADI) will demonstrate its leading signal processing technologies at this week's 3GSM World Congress, in Barcelona, Spain today through February 15, 2007. On display will be a showcase of products designed to enable mobile TV, improve audio and image quality, and add a whole new facet to the cellular phone user experience - motion sensing. As a leading technology supplier to the cellular communications industry for more than 15 years, ADI's portfolio spans portable and infrastructure applications. ADI's booth 1C58 is located at Hall 1.

"The next wave of must-have features relies on innovative signal processing technologies to incorporate TV capabilities, enable high-quality sound from the smallest form factors and deliver photographs that rival those taken from dedicated cameras," said Christian Kermarrec, vice president, RF and Wireless Systems, Analog Devices, Inc. "ADI's high-performance, low-power analog and digital signal processing See DSP.

technologies play a critical role in driving the proliferation of electronic entertainment in cellular handsets and mobile devices."

Lowering the Cost of 3G Phones

The latest RF transceiver in the Othello[R] family will be demonstrated. The single-chip AD6551 Othello-3 CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  W-CDMA See WCDMA.  transceiver includes innovative features that improve performance, while reducing cost, component count and board area by 40% compared to current solutions. Leveraging ADI's Othello direct-conversion architecture and an innovative low-noise transmitter, the Othello-3 (AD6551) transceiver eliminates the need for transmit-path surface acoustic wave A surface acoustic wave (SAW) is an acoustic wave traveling along the surface of a material having some elasticity, with an amplitude that typically decays exponentially with the depth of the substrate.  (SAW) filters. In addition to simplifying the RF section in 3G mobile terminals, Othello-3 reduces board space by 40 percent over competing solutions - key drivers to delivering smaller, more cost-effective 3G handsets. The Othello-3 transceiver will be demonstrated at the 3GSM World Congress.

Enabling Mobile TV

Analog Devices is working with industry leaders to bring broadband wireless broadcasting services to cell phones. ADI's Integrant in·te·grant

and Samsung, and developed the first solution to support China's emerging mobile TV standard for wireless handsets.

At 3GSM, ADI will exhibit its solutions for mobile TV.

Innovating with Motion Sensing

ADI's Motion Signal Processing Technology(TM) brings years of MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) Tiny mechanical devices that are built onto semiconductor chips and are measured in micrometers. In the research labs since the 1980s, MEMS devices began to materialize as commercial products in the mid-1990s.  technology experience combined with the low-power and low-cost demanded by consumers to achieve optimal, interactive experiences with their mobile devices. For example, MEMS motion-sensing devices can be used for game control, saving battery life by deactivating the screen when the phone is held up to the user's ear, enabling the phone to be used as a pedometer pe·dom·e·ter

and adjusting the display format depending on the orientation of the phone (vertical, horizontal, inverted). Handsets equipped with ADI's ADXL330 and ADXL323 accelerometers will be on display.

Making Superior Image Processing and Multimedia Affordable

Multimedia functionality, such as camera phone capabilities and MP3 and AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) An audio compression technology that is part of the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standards. AAC, especially MPEG-4 AAC, provides greater compression and better sound quality than MP3, which also came out of the MPEG standard.  audio playback for both ring tones and full-track music files, is no longer reserved for only high-end, expensive cellular phones. ADI will demonstrate the new SoftFone[R] AD6721, which reduces the cost and component count of multimedia features, and the SoftFone AD6722, which adds an integrated image signal processor (ISP) and direct camera interface to eliminate the need for a separate camera coprocessor in cameras up to 3 Megapixels. Together, the devices make a wealth of multimedia functionality affordable while improving image quality and sound.

Improving Cell Phone Camera Capabilities

ADI will also demonstrate innovative new products that improve cell phone cameras including lens drivers for cameras with autofocus autofocus

and zoom capability, and white-LED flash drivers. In addition, ADI will demonstrate its new low power HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) A digital interface for audio and video signals designed as a single-cable solution for home theater and consumer electronics equipment.  transmitter ICs for connecting cell phones and consumer electronics equipment of all kinds.

Improving Sound

Expanding functionality to provide a full audio processing experience, ADI will demonstrate its technologies and products for cellular phone audio systems. Analog audio processing technologies cover the range from microphone preamps to analog switches to high-efficiency mono and stereo Class-D power amplifiers, while digital processing capabilities demonstrate versatility in audio pre-processing and post processing effects. ADI's SigmaDSP audio processor enables the use of a fully programmable audio DSP that is easily configurable.

Continuing Leadership in the Industry with SoftFone[R] Dual-Mode TD-SCDMA/GSM Solutions

As the world's only supplier of complete 3G TD-SCDMA TD-SCDMA Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access  chipsets, ADI provides handset manufactures the option of choosing between single-mode or dual-mode voice-centric, or cutting-edge multimedia capable handsets. ADI will demonstrate its TD-SCDMA/GSM dual-mode handsets, using the high-performance AD6903 "LeMans-LCR+" digital baseband processor for multimedia handsets and the AD6901 "Monaco-LCR" digital baseband processor for entry-level voice-centric handsets.
