Although Florence is proudly celebrating its 100th Rhododendron rhododendron (rō'dədĕn`drən) [Gr.,=rose tree], any plant of the genus Rhododendron, shrubs of the family Ericaceae (heath family) found chiefly in mountainous areas of the arctic and north temperate regions and also of the  Festival, there really haven't been that many. The first festival was held in 1908, but two world wars interrupted in·ter·rupt

 its long run. It's not the 100th anniversary either - the first anniversary of the festival was in 1909, so the 100th anniversary won't be until next year. But they've been counting this way since at least 1957, when Florence marked its "50th Rhody Days. And they're darned darned
