An end to the athletic arms race? Coalition seeks sports spending reforms. (Update).


Some have equated the escalating cost of college sports programs--particularly football--to an arms race, one that comes at the expense of academics. Indeed, at a time of severe budget cuts at schools across the nation, it is hard to justify $2 million coaching salaries and $80 million stadium expansions.

The coalition will meet throughout the year to outline reforms, but athletic directors insist that they be included and consulted.

The coalition may set guidelines, "but it will have to come back to faculty athletic representatives, university presidents, and athletic administrators," said Bob Bowlsby Bob Bowlsby (born January 10, 1952) is the Director of Athletics at Stanford University.
