 academy for gay and lesbian students--everyone got an education in protest and support. Students arriving on the morning of September 8 were greeted by dozens of protesters waving Bibles and holding signs with antigay sentiments such as DEATH PENALTY FOR FAGS. Across the street, about 250 supporters chanted and held signs with pro-gay slogans such as GOD MADE US GAY.

Inside, officials were on hand to welcome the kids. "For those who say this school is unnecessary, I would refer you to some of the signs and comments from over there," said New York City council The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of the City of New York. It comprises 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five boroughs. The Council serves as balance of power against the mayor in a "strong" mayor-council government model.  speaker Gifford Miller Alan Gifford Miller (born November 6, 1969) is the former Speaker of the New York City Council, where he represented Council District 5. Barred from seeking reelection due to term limits, the Democrat ran in the Democratic primary for the opportunity to run against incumbent , referring to the protesters.

Celebrity supporters, including Yoko Ono, Cyndi Lauper, and Rufus Wainwright, announced September 5 that they will put out a tribute album they hope will raise $300,000 for the school. Also, a fund-raising concert is scheduled for November 8.
