An easy way to crack hickory nuts.
One suggestion would be to crack the nuts open lengthwise. Put them in a vice or nutcracker the long way, or hold them upright and hit the pointy end with a hammer.
Some people claim it helps to pour boiling water over the nuts. Let them soak for 15-20 minutes, then drain and crack.
You can also freeze them to make the shells more brittle. Take only a few at a time from the freezer and crack them before they start to thaw.
Even with these nutters' secrets, you'll still need a good nut pick ... and a lot of patience. Around here it's a job that usually falls on the old folks who don't have much to do during the winter. But it sure makes them appreciated!
