An early card for Christmas; The Christmas party: AS this will be the last edition of Remember When before Christmas we thought it appropriate to include these Christmas greetings and a vintage Christmas party photograph.
They were both sent in to us by frequent contributor, Dave Connor.
The Christmas greeting cards date from 1902 and 1903 and were sent by Mr
and Mrs B France of the Extension Hotel to their customers. The
Extension Hotel used to stand on North Ormesby Road on the corner of
Fidler Street -in fact there was an entrance on both streets. Fidler
Street and the others nearby such as Rock Street no longer exist but
were roughly where the Cineworld cinema car park is today. Mr and Mrs B
France were the licensees of the pub, which was demolished around the
same time as the streets which it served.
Dave has also included a festive photograph taken at a Christmas party in 1958 and shows the Ebenezer Sunday School party in full swing.
Dave, who is pictured having a dance, tells us that the Ebenezer Sunday School was on North Ormesby Road just up from St John the Evangelist Church but on the opposite side of the street.
We are sure that the Ebenezer Sunday School would have had a lot more Christmas spirit than the Dickens character who shared the same name.
