The first in a two-volume set intended for music researchers, this index contains an annotated listing of selected articles from Musical Courier from 1880, when it was first published, to 1940, when its focus changed. Included are about 3,500 citations of articles related to the musical instrument industry, including editorials, obituaries, illustrations, announcements, concert reviews, and advertisements. Articles are presented alphabetically by subject heading, which encompass composers, companies, construction practices, instrument descriptions and exhibitions, early music, ethnomusicology, import and export statistics, inventors, laws, new technologies, makers and manufacturers of instruments and related items, music journals, collections, musical pitch, patents, performers of less common instruments, trade associations, women in the industry, and US music history. All articles about John Philip Sousa and Antonin Dvorak are included. Annotations are brief, and not all of the articles listed are annotated. Those not specifically relating to the musical instrument industry are omitted. The second volume organizes citations by volume number. Adams is an author who has written volumes on wind instruments.
