An Upclose Look at the Judicial Process. (LABJ Forum).

For many people, especially busy ones, jury duty generally is regarded as a chore. A lot of workers even put together elaborate schemes in an attempt to get themselves dismissed. Still, few Americans would come right out and say that serving on a jury isn't important, so the Business Journal asks:

What has been your experience with jury duty?

I've actually done it and I loved it. Amazingly, even though everyone says "I'll never get on" I've served on several juries. I've even been on juries where some of the lawyers are former students. And I also sat on a jury where one of my fellow jurors was a judge! I don't want to say I always love it -- the waiting game is no fun. But I appreciate that it's an important part of our civic duty. I have had a good experience with jury duty. The one time I went I was placed on a case fairly quickly and I served my time. I enjoyed it - it was good seeing how the process works, mostly what you see is from TV or books -- it was my only real exposure. It was an educational experience and it really gave me a newfound new·found

I have no experience with jury duty. However, trying to get out of it is no longer an option. I just received a summons for March 4, and I don't intend on writing any more letters. I have written, probably, seven or eight over the last 15 years. In the past I've had my employer write hardship letters -- that they wouldn't pay for time off. And in my most recent letter I requested a change of location due to the terrorist attacks -- I didn't want to go downtown, and there was some truth to that. But that's it, I'm going this time. My employer now pays for jury duty, so I'm less reluctant to go.

I was summoned about Controller a year ago and we had to report to the court up in Newhall. I was never called on, however, I did meet a wonderful man who I am currently dating. That summons was one of the greatest thrills of my life, although that had nothing to do with the judicial system.
