 Gilkyson, age 10, packs her suitcase every morning, just in case that is the day she and her mother Jean will leave yet one more abusive boyfriend. When they do leave Roy behind, Jean decides it is time to visit her father-in-law and introduce him to Griff, who is unaware she has any living relatives. They arrive in Ishawooa, Wyoming to find Einar unwelcoming. He has always blamed Jean for his son's death. Mitch, a longtime friend of Einar's, is living a sorrowful sor·row·ful

 life, having been mauled by a grizzly. Einard gives Mitch his morphine morphine, principal derivative of opium, which is the juice in the unripe seed pods of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. It was first isolated from opium in 1803 by the German pharmacist F. W. A.  shot each day and cares for him, but they both know he is dying. Griff takes all of this in and easily becomes a warm and an important part of their lives. None of this sounds like much, but Spragg is a powerful writer who only reveals as much as he needs to. He has found a voice for each of the characters and communicated it in riveting riv·et·ing

Amendola and Marx are fine narrators who bring the story and the voices to life. Whether it is Griff or her mother "speaking," Marx has just the right tone for child or adult. When Jean is speaking to her daughter, the voice is bright and smiling, and when she talking to Noun 1. talking to - a lengthy rebuke; "a good lecture was my father's idea of discipline"; "the teacher gave him a talking to"

A rich, compelling tale, often seen through Griff's beguiling eyes.
