An Post workers walk out.

Byline: By MAEVE QUIGLEY

POST offices closed for an hour yesterday in protest at an EU plan to allow competition.

An Post workers joined colleagues across Europe in the action against proposals to open up the mail market to private companies.

The Communications Workers' Union is against the move because it believes it will mean higher postal charges and fewer post offices.

CWU's Sean McDonagh said: "If introduced without any safeguards, these proposals will lead to the destruction of the Universal Services Obligation which ensures all citizens get daily deliveries at a uniform price."

John Pedersen of Union Network International Europe added: "Ten years of postal liberalisation in Europe has so far meant fewer post offices, fewer postal outlets, fewer mail boxes and longer distances to access the post - all contrary to EU promises."
