Mobile users are frequently frustrated when handsets do not work correctly due to outdated configuration settings. This leads to poor service activation and constant customer service calls. The challenge for operators is to alleviate the strain by providing a method to manage phone settings and seamlessly update them for subscribers. Software architect Swapcom has perfected a device management (DM) tool to overcome the configuration problem and gain control over the growing number and sophistication so·phis·ti·cate

The key to marketing successful multimedia services for operators, such as CCT Wireless, is to ensure that new service capabilities are easily available.

In order to maximize their offering, CCT Wireless chose G&D's UniverSIM(R) DM. UniverSIM(R) DM is a combined device management solution consisting of an applet residing on the SIM card which detects the serial number of the handset and Swapcom's DM system. On handset power-up, G&D's applet detects the make and model of the handset and relays it to the device management system. On the DM server, the handset's specific capabilities and services are checked and the corresponding parameters or firmware are downloaded to the handset.

Swapcom's software tool for Device Management settings reviews the specific features of each handset. This ensures that reliable settings are delivered to all devices in the market. CCT Wireless can launch a bulk provisioning campaign over the network or enable its sales outlets to help subscribers when they visit the store. The software is scaleable and can later be upgraded to a fully-fledged tool to send updates delivered by phone manufacturers as their fleet evolves (referred to as firmware over the air or FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) The process of updating the firmware in cellphones and other wireless handheld devices by an over-the-air code transfer. Bitfone Corporation (www.bitfone.com) pioneered the technology and was acquired by HP in 2007. ).
