Summary

Our latest Spain and Portugal Annual Publication, profiles two closely linked telecom markets. Both have similar mobile and broadband penetration rates, respectably above the European Union European Union (EU), name given since the ratification (Nov., 1993) of the Treaty of European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, to the

European Community
(EU) average. Spain has Europe's fifth largest market for telecom services, and given the popular adhesion to emerging technologies there is considerable room for further growth in all sectors. Mobile growth slowed in 2005 as the market approached 100% penetration, but the three Third generation (3G) operators closed the year with new advanced data services and mobile TV trials which promise a new wave of take-up in 2006 and beyond. The mid-sized cable landscape was radically changed by the merger of the two main operators, Ono and Auna Telecomunicaciones, which has signalled a major consolidatory move in the fragmented market.

Portugal's mid-sized yet equally developed telecom market has emerged as one of the principal growth areas in Europe, particularly in the mobile and broadband sectors. All market sectors have been stimulated by a progressive regulator keen to move the country forward. As a result, Local Loop Unbundling Local loop unbundling (LLU) is the regulatory process of allowing multiple telecommunications operators use of connections from the telephone exchange's central office to the customer's premises.  (LLU LLU Loma Linda University
