An American Emblem. From head to tail, the bald eagle is thirty to thirty-six inches (about seventy-six to ninety-one centimeters) and has a wingspan of seventy-eight to ninety inches (about 198 to 228 centimeters). Male bald eagles weigh seven to 10 1/2 pounds (about three to four kilograms). Females are larger. Some may weigh as much as fourteen pounds (about five kilograms). The eagle skeleton weighs only 250 to 300 grams or about half a pound. The bones are light because they are hollow. The feathers help the eagle maintain its body temperature. The eagle does not have to migrate to warmer climates except to find food. |
