An Accordion takes sting out of Osana defeat for Pipe team.

Byline: Andrew King reports

JUST three-quarters of an hour after Osana had been narrowly eclipsed in the Champion Hurdle The Champion Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt horse race in the United Kingdom for four-year-old and above horses. It is run over a distance of 2 miles 110 yards (3,319 metres) on the Old Course at Cheltenham Racecourse on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival in March. , trainer David Pipe This article is about the Welsh football player.  and jockey Tom Scudamore teamed up again to put matters right with An Accordion.

For Scudamore the victory was all the sweeeter as it provided him with his first Cheltenham Festival The Cheltenham Festival is the most prestigious meeting in the National Hunt racing calendar in the United Kingdom and has race prize money second only to the Grand National.  winner, and An Accordion's two-and-a-quarter-length call over New Alco was certainly tenacious.

Once again, An Accordion's jumping was not exactly fluent at some fences, but when they were queueing up to challenge him going to the last, all he did was battle.

Pipe, saddling his second festival winner, said: "This is not the easiest of horses to ride, but the blinkers blinkers

"He really is a big baby as he idled in front, but Tom kept him up to his work and he has come away up the hill to win.

"A lot of the credit for that has to go to Jonothan Lower, who has done a lot of work with the horse at home."

An Accordion is owned by Brian Kilpatrick, of whom Pipe added: "Brian has been a great supporter of our yard over the years, so I could not be more pleased for him, and it is an added bonus that he bred the horse as well."

Scudamore, who picked up a whip ban on Osana earlier in the day, said of his first festival winner: "It's something special. I am absolutely delighted."

New Alco bounced back to something like his best form and his trainer Ferdy Murphy said: "There are no excuses. He got in close to the second-last and that cost him on the run to the straight, but I'm not sure that it made the difference and he could now head for Punchestown."

There was a sting in the tail for New Alco's rider, Davy Russell, as he was handed a one-day ban (March 22) for using his whip with excessive frequency.
