SIR: Last night I was looking at your March 2004 issue featuring the blobby plastic Kunsthaus in Graz by Peter Cook. Admittedly the surrealistic sur·re·al·is·tic  
adj.
1. Of or relating to surrealism.

2. Having an oddly dreamlike or unreal quality.

 juxtaposition of The Thing That Swallowed Tokyo against the Neo-Classical Hapsburg fabric of Graz creates some fleeting mojo, at least in the photographs. But look at your picture of the exhibition space inside! An utterly unqualified disaster as an environment for the visual arts.

Usually AR has some insightful writing. But in this case, Peter Blundell Jones Peter Blundell Jones AA Dipl MA (Cantab) is a British architect, historian, academic and critic. He trained as an architect at the Architectural Association school, London and has held academic positions at the University of Cambridge and London South Bank University.  naively claims 'the Kunsthaus is a highly innovative building with potential for a new and exciting dialogue with artists'. This claim in one form or another is made by the defenders of many poorly designed exhibition spaces, from Eisenman's Wexler Center forward.

For the unthinking, it justifies the creation of almost any form an architect wishes to produce, no matter how unsuited unsuited

 to the needs of a functioning museum or gallery. And the nearly unfathomable arrogance of so many architects in assuming that the objective of every artist's work, and indeed of every sort of exhibition, is to 'interact' with the container!

In truth, many new exhibition spaces, particularly those resembling amoebas, really do work biologically: they visually infect everything brought into them. Architects would do well to investigate spaces created with the close participation of working artists.
