Vanguard Winners Will Be Honored May 8 at The Cable Show '07

Tykeson and Roberts head the list of nine Vanguard Award winners who will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the cable industry. The 2007 Vanguard Awards will be presented on Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at a 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time reception and awards ceremony during The Cable Show '07, NCTA's 56th Annual Convention & International Exposition, May 7-9 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center The Mandalay Bay Convention Center is one of the largest privately owned and operated convention centers in the world. The 1 million square foot facility is owned by MGM Mirage. Inaugurated in 1965, the Vanguard Awards are presented annually to individuals who excel in both business and personal commitment to their colleagues, and whose accomplishments merit the recognition of the entire cable industry.

The Vanguard Awards will be presented by Debra Lee, Chair of the NCTA Vanguard Awards Committee, and Chairman & CEO, Black Entertainment Television, Inc.

Distinguished Leadership

Each year, two awards are presented, one to a woman and one to a man, who consistently have demonstrated the highest level of cable industry leadership. This year's recipients are:

Amy C. Tykeson, Chief Executive Officer, BendBroadband. A leading independent operator, BendBroadband recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The pioneering cable company has been led for the past decade by Amy Tykeson. Under Tykeson's leadership, BendBroadband is at the forefront of broadband technologies, launching high speed data in 1997, digital cable in 1999, high-definition and video on demand in 2004, digital simulcast in 2005, and digital phone service in 2006. Tykeson is the current President of the Board of the Oregon Cable Telecommunications Association; chairs the small operator's council as a member of the NCTA Board of Directors; and serves as Vice President of the Tykeson Family Charitable Trust The arrangement by which real or Personal Property given by one person is held by another to be used for the benefit of a class of persons or the general public. . Brian Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast Corporation. Under Roberts' leadership, Comcast has grown into the nation's leading provider of cable, entertainment and communications products and services. Comcast is a Fortune 100 company with $22.3 billion in annual revenues, 24.1 million customers and 87,000 employees. Roberts currently is serving his second consecutive term as Chairman of NCTA, and is a previous two-term Chairman of CableLabs. He's the recipient of numerous honors for leadership, including being named one of America's top CEOs for the fourth straight year by Institutional Investor Institutional Investor

Young Leadership

The growth of cable is in large part due to the energy, vitality and creativity of the many young people working within the industry, and the Young Leadership Award recognizes those individuals who already have made a mark on the industry and its constituents. This year's honoree is:

This award recognizes the efforts of cable's system managers, who work under intensely competitive conditions in today's dynamic telecommunications environment, and are critical to the cable industry's success at the local level. This year's recipient is:

John Bickham, President - Cable & Communications, Cablevision Systems Corporation. Bickham manages one of the country's largest cable systems, providing services to millions of customers in the New York metropolitan area New York–Northern New Jersey–Long Island is the most populous metropolitan area in the United States and the third most populous in the world, after Tokyo and Mexico City. . Cable's creative programming services make the industry a leader in the home entertainment business, and this award recognizes innovation, leadership and individual achievement of NCTA's programmer members. This year's honoree is:

Philip Kent, Chairman & CEO, Turner Broadcasting Systems Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (often abbreviated TBS Networks or TBS, inc.) is the company managing the collection of cable networks and properties started by Robert Edward "Ted" Turner from the mid-1970s to the late-1990s. , Inc. Chris Bowick, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Cox Communications Cox Communications is a privately owned subsidiary of Cox Enterprises providing digital cable television and telecommunications services in the United States. It is the third-largest[2] cable television provider in the United States, serving more than 6. , Inc. Bowick has been credited with keeping Cox on the cutting edge of new technologies, and is leading Cox's "extendable optical network" initiative to position the cable provider for future bandwidth opportunities. With 26 years of experience in the industry, Bowick is the current Chairman of the CableLabs Technical Advisory Committee and is credited as being an early leader in cable's move into residential telephone service. This award recognizes individuals who have had a significant impact on promoting a positive public image and advocating public policy positions for the cable industry at the national, state and/or local levels. This year's honoree is:

Libby O'Connell, Senior Vice President - Corporate Outreach, A&E Television Networks. As both historical advisor to The History Channel programming department and producer of educational and community-based initiatives for A&E Television Networks, O'Connell is the prolific originator of many programs that reflect the best of what the cable industry strives to achieve. Her achievements include oversight of onsite video production with more than 65 museums; the "Save Our History" initiative, recognized nationally for persuading communities to preserve local history; partnerships among local cable systems and the Partnership for a Drug Free America; and recognition for The History Channel by NAMIC for Hispanic Heritage Month initiatives.

Marketing

This award honors an individual who has been instrumental in the development of marketing approaches that significantly enhance cable's public image and increase customers. This year's honoree is:

Patricia Gottesman, Executive Vice President, Digital Marketing & Commerce, Cablevision Systems Corporation. During a 28-year career in cable - all of it spent at Cablevision - Gottesman has established herself as one of cable's most effective marketing, branding and product development executives. At Cablevision, she has been responsible for the development and ongoing evolution of all of Cablevision's award-winning digital and analog services as well as the effective presentation of "triple play" services to consumers. Gottesman is active in CTAM and served as Co-Chair of the 2006 CTAM Summit.

Associates & Affiliates

This award recognizes the important contributions of equipment manufacturers and service suppliers to cable industry innovation, growth and progress. This year's honoree is:

Cathy Wilson, Founder/President/Publisher, Broadband Library. Wilson is publisher of Broadband Library and Broadband Library International, two of the leading trade magazines for cable telecommunications engineers. Broadband Library is the highly-respected magazine that is an exclusive member-benefit of SCTE. Wilson is a past winner of the SCTE's Chairman's Award, and currently serves on the nominating committee A nominating committee is a group formed usually from inside the membership of an organization for the purpose of nominating candidates for office within the organization. It works similarly to an electoral college, the main difference being that the available candidates, either  for the SCTE Board of Directors.
