Amtrak and Caltrans announce 2-for-1 companion fare on California trains.


LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1995--From Sept. 12 through Nov. 2, Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run  and Caltrans are offering a special 2-for-1 fare on Amtrak California's Capitols, San Joaquins The San Joaquins are passenger trains operated by Amtrak California in California's Central Valley. Their two routes run 318 miles (512 km) from Jack London Square in Oakland and 280 miles (451 km) from I Street Station in Sacramento to Truxtun Avenue Station in Bakersfield.  and San Diegan The San Diegan was one of the named passenger trains of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, and a "workhorse" of the railroad. Its 126-mile (203-kilometer) route ran from Los Angeles, California south to San Diego. It was assigned train Nos. 70–79 (Nos.  trains and connecting Thruway buses.

Valid for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays only, the 2-for-1 promotion allows a person to travel free when a companion has paid full fare.

"This fare provides a great opportunity for Californians to abandon their cars and try the relaxed travel experience offered by trains," said Gil Mallery, chief executive officer of Amtrak's West Coast strategic business unit.

To receive the special fare, both parties must travel and be ticketed together. This fare is valid in conjunction with Amtrak's senior fare for persons aged 62 and over but is not valid with other Amtrak discounted fares or promotions.

Tickets can be purchased from staffed stations, travel agents or by mail, but cannot be obtained on board. For complete schedule and fare information, Amtrak customers can call 800/USA-RAIL.
