Amtech to participate in joint study of Japanese Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system.

), and Yazaki Corporation, to participate in a joint study of electronic toll collection Electronic Toll Collection (ETC), an adaptation of military "identification friend or foe" technology, aims to eliminate the delay on toll roads. It is a technological implementation of a road pricing concept.  systems with the Japanese government's Ministry of Construction and four regional Japanese public highway corporations. Mitsubishi Corporation, which will act as the consortium leader, has been Amtech's distributor in Asia since 1988.

The purpose of the study is to jointly collect the technical information necessary to define the specification of a non-stop electronic toll collection system for Japan. Implementation of non-stop electronic toll collection is expected to occur in 1997. Nine other parties or consortia will also participate in this phase of the process, which will include technical work on radio frequency issues and field testing of various technology solutions for electronic toll collection. The exact content of the joint study is under discussion with the Ministry and the four public highway companies.

The study is expected to take approximately 10 months to complete, after which national specifications for electronic toll collection will be prepared for procurement of operating systems by the highway companies.
