Ampex Data Systems Corp., Redwood City, Calif., Monday announced at NAB 2000 that a high-performance, fully integrated digital archiving system featuring an Ampex DST (812 automated tape library and Grass Valley Profile) video servers is now operational at flagship public television station KRMA in Denver.

Reflecting the company's newly developed Year 2000 strategic initiative created to aggressively expand its broadcast market dominance, Ampex Data Systems also partnered with Avalon Consulting Group and Columbine JDS Systems on the project.

The overall solution provides the station with the most advanced video server-based storage environment commercially available on the market, noted John Hennessy, director of video and broadcast marketing at Ampex Data Systems.

According to Bud Rath, director of engineering for KRMA, the implementation of the Ampex system completely changes the way the station handles its program material. "After all, Ampex was selected because it understands the needs of the broadcaster while its partners were selected both for their own features as well as their ease of integration with Ampex systems," he explained.

"KRMA's documentaries and other productions for broadcast require tremendous amounts of program material," Rath added. "We've set up a separate pair of mirrored servers here where video is digitized and logged into the Ampex system using the Columbine clip vault solution for real-time capturing, analyzing, cataloging, browsing, searching, retrieving and publishing video."

"In addition to the vastly greater speed and accuracy that we have already realized from this system, we also see a tremendous increase in productivity," said Rath. "For example, the Ampex recorder-based system allows us to continue logging in new data while producers and clients can simultaneously look at video that is already logged in and create edit decision lists from the video and the annotations.

"That's going to translate into more creativity and better productivity. Before, we were pulling our video off shelves where we had been storing it and producers were creating paper lists. So both the clients and our staff are very excited about this new development."
