Ampex DST high performance tape systems supported under Legato NetWorker; store and retrieve massive amounts of data as rapidly as possible to large capacity tape systems using enterprise storage management software.

REDWOOD CITY Redwood City, city (1990 pop. 66,072), seat of San Mateo co., W Calif., on San Francisco Bay; inc. 1868. Manufactures include commmunications, electrical, electronic, and medical equipment. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1997--Ampex Corp. Combining Ampex DST products with Legato NetWorker provides a fully integrated solution for any backup, archive or hierarchical storage management See HSM.  (HSM (1) (Hierarchical Storage Management) The automatic movement of files from hard disk to slower, less-expensive storage media. The typical hierarchy is from magnetic disk to optical disc to tape. ) application where speed and capacity are important.

Ampex DST tape drives and libraries are designed for high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue. , data intensive environments. They are well suited for a variety of data environments including those requiring fast backup of very large databases or for fast retrieval of archived files of HSM file migration. A single Ampex DST drive can back up over 50 gigabytes (GB) per hour and store up to 330 GB on a single cartridge. An Ampex DST library can access files on average in less than 25 seconds or over 500 100 MB files per hour.

Ampex DST systems are ideal for storing large file multimedia objects where high bandwidth is required.

NetWorker is an easy-to-use, highly scalable family of enterprise storage management applications for protecting mission critical data by providing backup and recovery, archive and retrieval and file migration (HSM) for networks of all sizes. NetWorker provides support for DST tape drives and ACLs through Legato's High Speed Device Support Module, which optimizes block size and buffer management to take advantage of the fast transfer rates provided by Ampex.

"With NetWorker 4.2.5 and Ampex DST tape storage systems, we are well positioned to lead the industry in high speed data transfer for demanding backup requirements and migrations of data from disk to tape," commented Gilbert Wai, senior vice president of product development for Legato Systems Inc. "The additional bonus for users is very rapid recovery of data should a restore be required and very fast access to data migrated to tape."

"We believe the combination of Ampex DST products and Legato NetWorker will result in a very powerful storage management solution," said Jim Christie, vice president of sales at Ampex. "DST systems are the fastest, highest capacity tape products available and NetWorker is one of the premier storage management applications offering backup, archive and HSM capabilities. Together, they will have an immediate impact in the enterprise."

Ampex offers a full line of data storage products, including the DST 310 tape drive capable of accepting 25 GB, 75 GB and 165 GB cartridges and the DST 312 drive, which holds 50 GB, 150 GB, and 330 GB cartridges. The DST 410 and DST 412 automated cartridge libraries store up to 1.2 terabytes (TB) and 2.4 TB in less than eight square feet of floor space.

The DST 810 and 812 automated libraries feature capacities of 6.4 TB and 12.8 TB respectively. These products can deliver a sustained rate of 15 MB/sec across a SCSI-2 interface, search speeds of up to 800 MB/sec, an average access time of less than 16 seconds and capacity of up to 330 GB on a single cartridge.
