A BIRMINGHAM village has been hailed as one of the world's top destinations in a new travel guide.

Leafy Bournville, home to the Cadbury factory, is said by Lonely Planet to be "one of the world's best places for chocolate".

The suburb is featured in the guide's Best in Travel 2010 publication along with the London Underground The London Underground is an underground railway system - also known as a rapid transit system - that serves a large part of Greater London, United Kingdom and some neighbouring areas. It is the world's oldest underground system, and is one of the longest in terms of route length. , the Glastonbury Festival

Locals said Bournville attracts visitors from around the world, not just to Cadbury's, but to its picturesque village green which is also home to the Rest House, shops and the largest carillon carillon, in music: see bell.

at the turn of the last century as "unique".

She said: "The number of international tourists has gone up and we've had a lot of people from Australia, Japan, Canada, America and Germany.

"People who come to Bournville are surprised at how much more there is here to see. They come from all over the country on coaches to Cadbury World.

"A lady who was visiting from London came across while all her family were at the factory. She said 'I told them I had to come back over to the green because the shops are wonderful'.

She came into the Rest House and said it was just magical."

Nearby Selly Manor, a Tudor house, medieval hall and period garden, has also seen high numbers of visitors this year.

Joy added: "Bournville is so beautiful to walk through and people are just so amazed by it.

"George Cadbury wanted what was best for the people so it is unique. People talk about it being an oasis in the middle of the city."
