Amoco Standardizes on Sun Solaris and Solstice Software for Exploration and Production UNIX Desktop Environment; Operating Environment and Management Software Chosen for Desktops Serving AMOCO Geologists, Geophysicists, and Engineers Worldwide.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 1996--Sun Microsystems Inc. and Amoco Corp. today announced that Sun's Solaris 2.5.1 operating environment In computing, an operating environment is the environment in which users run programs, whether in a command line interface, such as in MS-DOS or the Unix shell, or in a graphical user interface, such as in the Macintosh operating system.  and Solstice solstice (sŏl`stĭs) [Lat.,=sun stands still], in astronomy, either of the two points on the ecliptic that lie midway between the equinoxes (separated from them by an angular distance of 90°).  AutoClient desktop management software have been approved by Amoco Corp.'s Architecture and Standards Council as standards for the UNIX UNIX

To address dramatically increasing computing demands, Amoco is currently upgrading from Sun SPARCstation devices to UltraSPARC workstations running the Solaris 2.5.1 operating environment, and has purchased Solstice AutoClient licenses for its worldwide UNIX desktop environment.

"Amoco is continually seeking ways to offer performance gains to its desktop users while deploying systems administration resources more efficiently -- Sun offers the strongest solution," says Keith Gray, senior geophysicist, Amoco Exploration and Production Technology Group.

Anticipated advantages of the move to the Solaris 2.5.1 operating environment include enhanced productivity and access to new features like NFS (Network File System) The file sharing protocol in a Unix network. This de facto Unix standard, which is widely known as a "distributed file system," was developed by Sun. See file sharing protocol and WebNFS.

software version 3.0. The Solaris 2.5.1 operating environment will provide Amoco geologists, geophysicists, and reservoir engineers around the world with faster graphics and the ability to process increasingly large data sets.

The application of Solstice AutoClient software is expected to create substantial administrative cost administrative cost Managed care A cost incurred by the 'business' end of a health care facility or university–eg, staffing and personnel costs, nursing home and hospital administration, insurance, and overhead expenses. Solstice AutoClient software eliminates the need to do desktop backups, installations, and software management, and turns the desktop's disk into a cache for the operating system operating system (OS)

Gray, Solstice AutoClient software will also add scalability to its Solaris network servers and reduce user downtime worldwide.

"Today's corporate right-sizing efforts are challenging system administrators to keep costs down as they manage large distributed systems Distributed systems (computers)

. Sun developed Solstice AutoClient to reduce the costs of desktop administration by as much as 90%," says Terry Keeley, vice president and general manager for Sun's Solstice brand of products.

"Solstice AutoClient is evidence of Sun's commitment to Amoco -- and other leaders in the enormous segment of the energy industry served by Sun --- who have an increasingly high ratio of UNIX workstation users to system administrators."
