Building on initiatives begun by George W. Bush, President Barack Obama is pushing for accelerated citizenship for foreign nationals who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

"Stretched thin in Afghanistan and Iraq, the American military will begin recruiting skilled immigrants who are living in this country with temporary visas, offering them the chance to become United States citizens in as little as six months," the New York Times reported on February 15.

"Immigrants who are permanent residents, with documents commonly known as green cards, have long been eligible to enlist," noted the Times. "But the new effort, for the first time since the Vietnam War, will open the armed forces to temporary immigrants if they have lived in the United States for a minimum of two years."

Like most government programs, it is scheduled to begin small--projected at around 1,000 enlistees nationwide in the first year. But, according to the Times report, the Army anticipates it soon could expand to 14,000 recruits a year, or about one in six soldiers.

Eight years after 9/11, visa fraud and immigration fraud are still so rampant that a temporary visa screening provides virtually no security against penetration by our enemies. The cases of Ali Mohamed, Melek Can Dickerson, Nada Nadim El-Aouar Prouty, and Sgt. Hassan Akbar are but a few examples of the horrendous consequences of our laxity on internal security screening.

Ali Mohamed, an Egyptian soldier, became a military trainer of our Special Forces at Ft. Bragg, then went on to work for the CIA and FBI. All the while, he was a top agent for Islamic Jihad and al-Qaeda, training terrorists inside the United States (such as the 1993 World Trade Center bombers) and serving as Osama bin Laden's personal trainer and terrorism planner.

Nada Nadim Prouty penetrated the FBI and CIA and used FBI computers to access files on Hezbollah. Sgt. Hassan Akbar threw grenades into the tents of his fellow U.S. soldiers and then strafed them with rifle fire, killing two and wounding 14.

A 2005 report by the Government Accountability Office noted that of "94 foreign-born terrorists known to operate in the United States between the early 1990s and 2004, 59 or two-thirds committed immigration fraud, including 6 of the September 11th hijackers."
