Amkor/Anam and Texas Instruments Extend Cooperation on Deep Submicron Process Technology for Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing.

Business Editors

CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 2000

Agreement Adds 0.5 micron micron: see micrometer.

One micrometer, which is one millionth of a meter or approximately 1/25,000 of an inch. The tiny elements that make up a transistor on a chip are measured in micrometers and nanometers. See process technology.

Amkor Technology Amkor Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMKR) is a high-tech semiconductor product manufacturer that includes Intel and IBM among its primary customers. Previously headquartered in West Chester, Pennsylvania, United States, Amkor recently announced that it will move to Chandler, , Inc., (Nasdaq: AMKR AMKR Amkor Technology ) and Anam Semiconductor Inc. today announced a new long-term cooperative agreement with Texas Instruments See TI.

(company) Texas Instruments - (TI) A US electronics company.

A TI engineer, Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit in 1958. Three TI employees left the company in 1982 to start Compaq.
Incorporated, (TI), for the production of advanced logic semiconductors.

Under terms of the agreement, Anam Semiconductor and Amkor Technology will replicate TI's 0.5 micron metal pitch, traditional metalization process in Anam Semiconductor's wafer fabrication Wafer Fabrication is a procedure composed of many repeated sequential processes to produce complete electrical or photonic circuits. Examples include production of radio frequency (RF) amplifiers, LEDs, optical computer components, and CPUs for computers.  facility located in Buchon, Republic of Korea.

The Anam wafer fab is producing 25,000 wafers per month, using 1.0-micron metal pitch and 0.7-micron metal pitch processes. Anam is expanding the facility's capacity to enable production of 30,000 200 mm wafers per month. This includes 0.35 mircon and 0.25 micron gate length semiconductor processes that Amkor previously licensed from TI, in addition to the 0.18 micron process replicated at the plant earlier this year. Amkor sells wafers, tested die and fully packaged semiconductors based upon these process technologies. Full production of 0.18 micron technology Micron Technology ("Micron") NYSE: MU is a multinational company based in Boise, Idaho, USA, best known for producing many forms of semiconductor devices. This includes DRAM, SDRAM, flash memory, and CMOS image sensing chips.  begins in Q4 2000.

"Our collaboration with Amkor and Anam provides TI with additional advanced logic wafer capacity," said Kevin Ritchie, senior vice president, Texas Instruments. "Amkor and Anam are important manufacturing partners for TI. They achieved outstanding results during 1999 and have been awarded Texas Instruments' Supplier Excellence Award (SEA) for 1999.

The aggressiveness of a semiconductor process technology is determined from a combination of both the gate length and the metal pitch. Gate length helps determine the speed and robustness of the individual transistors, and the metal pitch determines how compact the overall design can be. A metal pitch is the overall width, measured in microns, of a metal line and single adjacent space. Highly dense semiconductor processes facilitate single chip and System in Package (SiP) products.

"Working with TI allows us to continue our long-term vision to provide turnkey services, from customer design support to wafer fabrication, assembly and test," said Eric Larson, Amkor executive vice president. "With this agreement in place, Amkor has secured the capability to provide Texas Instruments and our other customers with leading process technology and services that meet or exceed the requirements outlined in the current Semiconductor Industry Association roadmaps."
