Amino molding compounds suppress SARS virus.

Perstorp AB in Persterp, Sweden, has developed a line of antiviral antiviral /an·ti·vi·ral/ (-vi´ral) destroying viruses or suppressing their replication, or an agent that so acts.

an·ti·vi·ral
adj.
 and antimicrobial antimicrobial /an·ti·mi·cro·bi·al/ (-mi-kro´be-al)
1. killing microorganisms or suppressing their multiplication or growth.

2. an agent with such effects.
amino thermoset A polymer-based liquid or powder that becomes solid when heated, placed under pressure, treated with a chemical or via radiation. The curing process creates a chemical bond that, unlike a thermoplastic, prevents the material from being remelted. See thermoplastic.  compounds for injection and compression molding Compression molding is a method of molding in which the molding material, generally preheated, is first placed in an open, heated mold cavity. The mold is closed with a top force or plug member, pressure is applied to force the material into contact with all mold areas, and heat  that are reported to kill the SARS virus on contact. The compounds are also said to be effective against a range of bacteria, yeasts, and molds. These Polygiene compounds contain an undisclosed antiseptic additive in urea formaldehyde, melamine melamine (mĕl`əmēn'), common name for 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine. Melamine is a trimer (see polymer) of cyanamide, H2NC≡N, and is synthesized from calcium carbide.  formaldehyde, or blends of the two. Perstorp says the inherent antimicrobial and antiviral properties of the base resins are increased by the additive, which becomes a permanent part of the resin matrix and is uniformly distributed throughout a molded part. Perstorp claims there is no tradeoff of resin properties with the additive.

Polygiene compounds are aimed at products for hospitals, hotels, restaurants, public transportation, and privale residences. Perstorp has a U.S. office, Perstorp Compounds, in Florence, Mass. Tel: (413) 584-2472 * PT Direct: 173XV
