Amily's award winning baconry is a sizzling success.


When a fall in pig prices threatened Lynda and Ithyl Brown's livelihood, the Mid Wales Mid Wales is the name given to the area of Wales between North Wales and South Wales. It borders England via the Welsh Marches to the east and the Irish Sea via Cardigan Bay to the west (West Wales is to the south-west).  farmers decided to try their hands at processing their own meat --and the diversification has proved a sizzling siz·zle

The Brown family has won a series of prestigious prizes and awards since Neuadd Fach Baconry at Llandinam, near Llanidloes was established nine years ago. These accolades include the Great Taste Award for the Best Speciality in Wales Wales, Welsh Cymru, western peninsula and political division (principality) of Great Britain (1991 pop. 2,798,200), 8,016 sq mi (20,761 sq km), west of England; politically united with England since 1536. The capital is Cardiff.  for back bacon in 2006 together with a string of Wales True Taste awards.

 pork steak Pork steaks are cut from pork shoulder blade (Boston) roast. Like the roasts, the steaks are flavorful and contain a significant amount of fat, which helps keep them moist while cooking.  and is also through to the second round of the British Small Business Champions 2008 competition run by the Federation of Small Businesses in Wales.

Neuadd Fach Baconry is a completely family run enterprise, with Ithyl and Lynda running the 35-acre farm and baconry, eldest son David, a software engineer, designing the website and youngest son Phil running the spit-roast catering business alongside his successful Riverside cafe at nearby Dolwen.

The Browns established their pig herd in 1986 and, with support from an understanding bank manager, took the processing plunge in 1999 to add value to their specially bred closed herd of Large White based pigs.

From processing just two pigs a week and employing two people part-time at the start, the business now processes up to 12 pigs a week and employs six part-timers.

 list of meat products includes Welsh dry cured and smoked bacon, gammon, tenderloins, fresh pork joints, sausages and hamburgers, which are sold in shops across Montgomeryshire. The goal is to be able to process all the pigs from the herd of 45 by expanding the customer database across Wales and beyond and introducing chefs to the products.

Lynda says every time they sell a pig to an abattoir abattoir (ăb'ətwär`) [Fr.], building for butchering. The abattoir houses facilities to slaughter animals; dress, cut and inspect meats; and refrigerate, cure, and manufacture byproducts.  they lose 30 [pounds sterling] a head, which underlines how important it is to sell all the meat through their own business.
