College has implemented FilesX as a key element of its data protection infrastructure for its largest and most critical windows servers and applications. The components used include FilesX XpressRestore(TM) and XchangeRestore(TM) to provide 24/7 disk-based protection and recovery capabilities for servers located in Amherst's data center in western MA.Amherst College Amherst College, at Amherst, Mass.; founded 1821 as a college for men, coeducational since 1975. A liberal arts institution, Amherst maintains a cooperative program with Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College, and the Univ. of Massachusetts. acquired the FilesX CDP On-Demand(TM) technology to overcome two major obstacles. The first obstacle was finding an effective way to protect their Exchange E-mail system's message stores to allow for quick, easy, and rapid recovery of individual lost messages or an entire store. The second challenge was improving the recovery time that would be needed in the event that the Exchange or other mission critical servers suffer a major failure. Amherst estimated that recovering from the loss of an entire Exchange server would have taken at least a day, possibly two, with most of that time spent pulling the backups from tape. According to John W. Manly, Director of the Systems and Networking Group at Amherst, "Prior to FilesX, it took us three days to back up our largest server, and because restores are slower, restoring it might have taken five days." The long backup times also meant that backup jobs that failed for any reason were a serious problem, and failures were not infrequent. David Irwin, the Systems Administrator in the group with primary responsibility for backups, adds "I was literally shackled to my backups. I spent days and nights babysitting these processes both at work and at home." Manly added, "One of the things we love about FilesX is that it gives us both the ability to take snapshots and to have those snapshots placed on remote storage directly." When one or more Exchange messages need to be recovered, Irwin simply uses XpressMount(TM) to gain access to the desired snap copy of one of the Exchange data stores, and then uses the XchangeRestore(TM) tool to reach directly into that store and extract the needed messages or folders. "We have been running these FilesX solutions for about a year now and are extremely satisfied," said Manly. "Our critical data is better protected than it has ever been, our time to recover individual messages and files has dropped from hours to minutes, and our ability to recover from major storage or server failures has dropped from days to hours. Plus, FilesX has given us the added bonus of a recovery point within a few hours of any failure rather than from the middle of the previous night." Cambridge Computer - a national integrator specializing in data storage and backup systems - introduced the Amherst College IT team to FilesX CDP On-Demand(TM) technology - the first truly adaptive data protection and recovery solution. CDP On-Demand(TM) encapsulates the mechanisms to accommodate continuous protection, frequent and scheduled protection scenarios, and is equipped with advanced recovery tools for Mission Critical Applications.
