Amgen (Nasdaq:AMGN) today announced that it has named to its Board of Directors Donald B. Rice, Ph.D., the President and Chief Executive Officer of UroGenesys, Inc. Dr. Rice is one of the founders of UroGenesys, a privately-held biotechnology company based in Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries. , Calif., that seeks to discover and develop novel and innovative products for the diagnosis and treatment of urological diseases.

He was President and Chief Executive Officer of the RAND Corporation Rand Corporation, research institution in Santa Monica, Calif.; founded 1948 and supported by federal, state, and local governments, as well as by foundations and corporations. Its principal fields of research are national security and public welfare.  from 1972 to 1989.

Dr. Rice is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and serves as a member of the U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century. He is also Chairman of the Board of Governors of the RAND Graduate School.

Dr. Rice holds a Ph.D. in economics from Purdue University Purdue University (pərdy`, -d`), main campus at West Lafayette, Ind.  and a M.S. in industrial management, also from Purdue. He received his B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. The appointment brings the number of directors of Amgen's Board to 11.
