Amgen Names Additional Board Member.


THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 1998--Amgen (Nasdaq:AMGN) Tuesday announced that it has named Jerry D. Choate to its board of directors.

He is the chairman of the board and chief executive officer of The Allstate Corp. and Allstate Insurance Co.

Prior to becoming chairman of Allstate in 1995, Choate, 59, served as president and chief executive officer beginning in 1994. Choate began his Allstate career in 1962.

Choate also serves on the boards of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Insurance Information Institute, and Catalyst (a nonprofit organization that works to advance women in business). He is on the board of directors of America's Promise-The Alliance for Youth and chairs its corporate advisory board.

Choate is also a member of the advisory board of J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago.

"I'm confident that Jerry will make a major contribution to Amgen and its board of directors," said Gordon Binder, chairman and chief executive officer.

Choate earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial management from San Jose State University.
