Amgen CEO to lead institute; Chiron CEO named chairman-elect.


LA JOLLA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 1995--The California Health Care Institute (CHI), a public policy research and advocacy organization representing California academic medical research institutions, biotech, pharmaceutical and medical device firms, has elected Gordon M. Binder as chairman of the board.

At CHI's quarterly board meeting, held Oct. 9 in Laguna Niguel, Calif., Binder, chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Amgen Inc., was named to succeed G. Kirk Raab, former president of Genentech, who served as the group's first chairman.

Binder has served as the CEO of Amgen, a global biotechnology company that produces human therapeutics based on advanced cellular and molecular biology molecular biology, scientific study of the molecular basis of life processes, including cellular respiration, excretion, and reproduction. The term molecular biology was coined in 1938 by Warren Weaver, then director of the natural sciences program at the Rockefeller , since 1988, and as chairman of the board since 1990.

Before joining Amgen in 1982 as chief financial officer, Binder was for 10 years vice president for finance and treasurer at the System Development Corp. Previously, he held various financial management positions at Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn, Mich.

In other board business, Edward E. Penhoet, Ph.D., president and CEO of Chiron Corp., a biotechnology company located in Emeryville, Calif., was named CHI chairman-elect. Gavin Herbert, chairman of the board of Allergan Inc., a biomedical R&D company with headquarters in Irvine, Calif., that makes therapeutic products for eye, skin and neuromuscular diseases, was elected vice-chairman.

Also, Arthur D. Levinson Arthur D. Levinson (born March 31, 1950 in Seattle, Washington, United States) is President and Chief Executive Officer of Genentech. He has held these positions since July 1995, and was named chairman of the board of directors in 1999. , Ph.D., president and CEO of Genentech, was elected to the CHI board of directors.

Penhoet has been CEO of Chiron since co-founding the company in 1981. Before founding Chiron, Penhoet was a faculty member of the Biochemistry Dept. of the University of California, Berkeley The University of California, Berkeley is a public research university located in Berkeley, California, United States. Commonly referred to as UC Berkeley, Berkeley and Cal , and continues as an adjunct member of the faculty.

He serves on the boards of directors for numerous organizations including the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the Bay Area BioScience Center, and the UC System Biotech Advisory Committee.

Herbert co-founded Allergan in 1950 and served as CEO from 1961 to 1991. He was named chairman in 1977. Herbert was executive vice president of SmithKline Beckman Corp. from 1986 to 1989. In addition to serving as vice-chairman of CHI, Herbert is a trustee of the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission , and director of Research to Prevent Blindness, and Beckman Instruments.

Genentech, a leading biotechnology company that produces human pharmaceuticals for significant unmet medical needs, appointed Levinson president and CEO in July 1995. He joined the company in 1980 as a senior scientist, was named vice president of research in 1990, becoming senior vice president in 1993.
