. On September 23, Ames welcomed thousands of customers from the local communities to its new stores, one of the largest and most successful retail Grand Openings to date.

Forty-seven stores are the last of the former Hills stores, marking the final of three conversion phases transforming the stores to the Ames format. Nine stores are former Caldor sites.

Ames has opened a record 161 stores in 1999 so far, propelling the Company to the nation's largest regional discount retailer. The Hills acquisition established Ames in five new states and has strategically positioned the Company for future growth.
