Dr. Hawkins will be responsible for setting the strategic direction of the company's genomics business and for building it into a strong and profitable business area. He will report to Andrew Carr, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. of Amersham Biosciences, and will join the company's executive committee. The position will initially be based in Sunnyvale, California. Dr. Hawkins joins Amersham Biosciences from his position as Director of the Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) was created in 1997 to unite the expertise and resources in genome mapping, DNA sequencing, technology development, and information sciences pioneered at the DOE genome centers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Lawrence Livermore (JGI JGI Joint Genome Institute JGI Jane Goodall Institute JGI Just Got It (chat) JGI Just Google It ), which is internationally recognized as one of the world's leading sequencing centers and for its role in the Human Genome Project. Dr. Hawkins started his career with the JGI in 1999 as Deputy Director, was appointed Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, scientific research centers run by the Univ. of California, located in Berkeley, Calif., and Livermore, Calif., respectively. Genomics Division Director in July 2000 and became Director of the JGI in November 2000. Prior to joining the JGI, he served as Vice President of Genomics for CuraGen Corporation. Dr. Hawkins obtained his B.Sc at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom and completed a Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1993.
