IN Cell Analyzer Enables Scientists to Study Drug Activity

in Living Cells in Real Time

Amersham Biosciences, the life sciences business of Amersham plc Amersham plc was a UK pharmaceutical company, specializing in medical diagnostics and life science products.

The company was formed in 1997 by merging Amersham International (U.K.), Pharmacia Biotech (Sweden) and Nycomed (Norway).

AstraZeneca has already committed to taking delivery of two IN Cell Analyzer systems during the fourth quarter of 2002.

"We have been working with the IN Cell Analyzer for several months, and we have been very impressed by its powerful cellular imaging capabilities and sophisticated software tools," said Elaine Sullivan, Ph.D., Director of The Advanced Science and Technology Laboratory at AstraZeneca. "The system is allowing our scientists to probe deep inside a living cell and evaluate directly the effects of a drug compound on cellular processes in real time."

Amersham Biosciences created the IN Cell Analyzer in response to increasing demand for technologies that would enable testing of potential new drugs directly in cells--called cell-based assays. The system's innovative detection technology permits sub-cellular imaging and the analysis of nearly 400 assays in as little as 15 minutes and of over 10,000 cellular images in eight hours. At the heart of the IN Cell Analyzer is a proprietary, laser-based, confocal confocal

imaging system that includes three high-speed cameras.

"The exquisite sensitivity and unsurpassed analytical speed of the IN Cell Analyzer enables researchers to view cell function in real time and to observe the biological changes that occur when a drug compound enters the cell," said Mike Evans, Ph.D., Vice President of Bioassays at Amersham Biosciences. "It provides powerful imaging technology in an easy-to-use system that greatly enhances the speed and performance of cellular screening for drug discovery."

Amersham Biosciences, the life sciences business of Amersham plc (LSE: NYSE: OSE: AHM), is a world leader in developing and providing integrated systems and solutions for disease research, drug development and manufacture. Its systems are used to uncover the function of genes and proteins, for the discovery and development of drugs and for the manufacture of biopharmaceuticals.
